Still, there is one thing I do not like about trains. It is this attitude of sharing your intimate thoughts with the people around by using your mobile. Is it because everyone nowadays shares open office space and doesn‘t want to talk private during office hours? Is it because you are constantly lacking time and try to „get few things done" before getting into the office? Or is it because you want to share your symbol of flexibility and trendyness - in the best case your most up-to-date iPhone - with everyone around you?

I tell you what: Sometimes I wish myself back 25 years to the times when I was queueing for 20 minutes to get into the school bus, looking and talking to the others around me. The busses those days were pretty stuck, I was lucky my sister came always early and blocked some space for me. But the most important thing: I could tell those days how many people were in the bus with me.Today, the train might look half empty, but still all these invisible travellers on peoples mobiles are occupying space in our minds. And it‘s hard to stop them from that.
I wish the day to come when we respect back public zones as such and stop declaring them to be our private living room.

I believe it‘s more than fair to have the English language benefit from the richness of other cultures. All in life is about balance, so let‘s donate some words back to our friends in the English-speaking countries. A little thank you to them for tolerating our sometimes limited and violent use of their language.

Back to the hedgehog. Actually they should be winter sleeping these days - not to bad as an idea to escape the current cold and fog... Why do I bring this phrase up? Well, I‘m actually struggling a bit with it in conjunction with the Swiss. Is Berne still hedgehoging itself that much from the rest of the world as it used to in the past? Banker‘s secrecy is dissolving, passport controls (at least for EU citizens) have disappeared and the first Guantanamo captive from Uzbekistan was accomodated by Geneva two days ago. (The Giftedness) If someone asked me how I would describe the caracter of a typical Swiss person - good morning to the stereotyped thinking ;-)) - I would certainly name search aspects as modesty, correctness and accuracy.

To give you some examples: I'm invited for dinner at a friends house, some other folks are joining. We have a great evening all together without anyone talking their jobs. The next day I understand that the woman who enjoyed us all with her amazing story-telling that night is
a Swiss embassador. Wow.

What do I mean by correctness? Is it the world of the tailor-made suit wearing bankers from Zurich Bahnhofstrasse, making headlines in these times of economical changes?

Not necessarily. Imagine your beloved piece of jewelry, in my case a marvelous ring, get‘s lost. I took it off for handwashing whilst being at cafe Sprüngli. The bad thing: I only realized some time after when the cafe had already closed. To make it short: An honest unknown found it and handed it in. Lucky and thankful me! I bet, in any other place on this planet I wouldn‘t have seen my jewel back. By the way, the chocolate brioche at Sprünglis tastes even better since then!

You might argue now that there‘s not a big difference between correctness and accuracy. Probably right. Still, accuracy evolves a different set of pictures in my mind. The well marketed and praised Swiss accuracy is not only enhancing the Swiss watch industry. It is also visible on a biweekly basis to everyone out in the street. Where? Well, get out for a walk on Tuesday morning in my quarter in Zurich and you will spot piles of paper tied up carefully, all having the same shape. Not only can you tell from the accuracy of the bundle what the caracter of people packing these will be. I can assure you, you will often be amazed by the patience and affection that sits in these piles. To put it clear: I'm talking waste paper, not grandmas birthday parcel!

Still I do not understand one thing: This adorable nation, why do they call their menu "a discretion" to say "all you can eat"? Is this a case of Swiss discretion?
