A carnival Malmedy
(The giftedness) The so-called "fifth season" is in full swing. A ceremonial meeting follows another, it is sung, laughed and geschunkelt ... and many a Maid "jebützt" ... The Rhenish carnival has its own laws. Many plunge into the turmoil, some fleeing the "prescribed" cheerfulness ...
But what really make the neighbors? Carnival is also celebrated in other places, and have done so for centuries. I want to take you today, once on the Belgian border, in the place where I first saw the light of the world have: Malmedy, "lu p'tite ville à des Fagnes pi" (the small town at the foot of the High Fens).
The Malmedy carnival is first mentioned in 1459. He is a street carnival, which experienced its peak just as the Rhenish carnival on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. It starts but softly and secretly already 4 weeks prior to the respective "Fat Thursday." Only for the children, then for the older generation, then quite wild and foolish in the third week, then on the last Thursday before Mardi Gras but relatively moderate to expire, so not really comparable to the Thursday of women "in Cologne.
is Officially going on Saturday afternoon when the "Trouvlê" will hand over the reins of the city from the hand of the mayor. The unofficial opening of the carnival - a former insider type, but is now also found in the catering - the night of Friday on the Saturday when the clock at 0.00 "Marche du Trouvlê" is played in a pub. Many a contemporary (the author too) has already forgotten about time the place and time!
go after the city administration is meant by the "Big Police" (the fat police) to the 4 corners of town to be with gun salutes the city's population also reported to the start of the main carnival time. The following are the processions of the individual music clubs in the city (there are 7 pieces in a population of just under 6,500 in the city itself).
The big day is Sunday, when the train winds its way like a tape worm through the narrow streets of the quaint town. DC um13.00 is the start after the main square, the "Dance dû Mesnier" taken place. The Malmedy Carnival thrives on tradition, traditional costumes and masks as the "Haguète", the "Long-Né", the "Long-Bresse", the "Long-Ramon", etc ... constitute either old jobs, or even what the citizen has presented in recent centuries in a black African (the "Sâvedje"). Additionally, we are again the local music clubs, which represent a very specific theme each year in appropriate costumes and music. At about four, half past four, the train can dissolve it into the "Bane Corante" on the "conveyor belt", so that in good Weather still looks to late into the night, the masked strip through town.
Monday it is then still in the city ... at least apparently. Runs the risk of who knows some locals and in a de runs many small pubs ... Outside, the two choirs of the city bring in a satirical form of the misfortunes of many citizens to the best.
The major conclusion is then on Tuesday to pull out next to a "traditional wedding social," then the "Ardennais" by the hundreds around the city, only to burn about 19:00 clock, the "Haguète" in the market place on a huge pyre. .. The official end of Carnival has begun. But who knows the Malmedy ... Exactly. For that is far from the end ... usually he always comes early in the morning of Ash Wednesday again at home, often with plenty of sleep loss ... Many do it not therefore continue with the traditional herring dinner on Wednesday evening ...
And, dear readers and dear readers to get a little pleasure? Then visit my home town on 14 February 2010, and a bit of fun. If you are not a carnival friend, so it's not bad ... a visit to Malmedy and the surrounding area is worth over the whole year.
